Winter soccer for the 2026 junior season restarted in Canberra with first games kicking off around the city on Saturday, drawing on school gymnasiums and community fields that accommodate multiple codes simultaneously.

The timing aligns with broader youth development efforts that rely on fixed venues to maintain consistent access for players aged five and up. High demand across Canberra has created facility pressure, yet existing sites continue to host training and matches without weather-related cancellations at indoor locations such as those operated by Kaleen Indoor Sports.

AIS Pathway Camps Use Dedicated Infrastructure

The Australian Institute of Sport hosted 10 youth pathway camps in July 2026 across eight sports including swimming, netball, combat sports and boxing. These sessions involved 333 athletes and staff and focused on talent development for Brisbane 2032, underscoring how the institute's specialised facilities serve as a central hub for emerging competitors.

West Canberra Wanderers Football Club, established in 2014, extended its youth pathway in 2024 to include children as young as seven through its Community Rewards Program, with training and matches supported by local ovals and indoor spaces. Gungahlin Jets Juniors, a grassroots AFL club for participants aged five and older, continues to field boys', girls' and mixed teams after receiving AFL Canberra's Junior Club of the Year award in 2024.

School Sites Expand Access Through Hiring and Programs

Canberra High School's Athlete Development Program for Years 7-10 covers athletics, basketball, AFL, futsal, netball, soccer and tennis, with applications for the 2025 cycle closing in Week 9 of 2025 and notifications issued in Term 1 2026. High school gymnasiums across the city are available for community hire and can accommodate multiple basketball, netball, volleyball and futsal courts at once.

School Sport ACT coordinates trials and competitions that feed into regional and national pathways, while the School Sport Australia Track and Field Championship for ACT students is set for 27-30 November 2025 in Canberra. The 2026 Capital Athletics Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Sunday 19 July at Stromlo Forest Park, providing an outdoor venue that complements indoor options during winter months.
